What to Wear for Padel in Doha

Padel has gone from niche to everywhere in Qatar in a few short years, and most people are still playing in whatever they wear to the gym. That mostly works — but padel makes specific demands that gym kit does not always meet.

What padel does to your clothing

Padel is not running and it is not tennis. It is short, sharp bursts: two steps, a twist, a reach overhead, a quick reset. You are rotating through the torso constantly and reaching in every direction, often off the back glass.

That means anything restrictive across the shoulders or too tight through the chest will fight you. And because rallies are long and the pace is stop-start, you sweat more than the effort feels like it should warrant.

Indoor courts get hot

This is the part that surprises people. A glass-walled indoor court with air conditioning still traps heat, and four players generate a lot of it. An hour of doubles in Doha is genuinely sweaty even in an air-conditioned venue, and outdoor courts between May and September are a different proposition entirely.

So the same rule as the gym applies, more so: synthetic, not cotton. A cotton t-shirt will be soaked and heavy by the second set.

What works

  • A lightweight tee or tank with room across the shoulders. You need full overhead reach — try raising both arms before you commit to something fitted. Our tops and tanks are cut with that in mind.
  • Shorts with real pockets. This is the padel-specific one. You want to carry a spare ball, and shallow gym-short pockets drop it mid-point. Check the pocket depth. See shorts.
  • Nothing that clings. Fabric stuck to your back mid-rally is a distraction and it stops wicking.
  • A spare shirt in the bag. If you are playing more than an hour, you will want it.

What about shoes

Worth saying plainly: we do not make footwear, but it matters more than your clothing. Padel courts are artificial turf with sand, and running shoes do not grip laterally on it. A padel or clay-court tennis shoe with a herringbone sole is the right tool. Playing in running shoes is how people roll ankles.

For women playing padel

Support level matters here — padel involves more jumping and sudden direction change than it looks like from the sidelines. A medium-support bra is usually enough for social play; if you are playing competitively, go high support. Our sports bras guide has more on the difference. Leggings or shorts both work; leggings have the advantage of no chafing during long rallies.

A note on timing

If you are playing outdoors in Doha, the difference between a 6am court and a 6pm court in July is enormous. Early morning and late evening are the only realistic outdoor windows through summer. Indoor venues are worth the extra cost between May and September.

We have pulled together the pieces that work best on court in our padel collection.
